Aerobin Installation

Heatherlie Homes has always had a “maintaining the ecological balance “ethos. So it was no surprise to our Residents and their families when we installed an Aerobin and Green Cone waste composting system at Heatherlie. We chose the “Aerobin” as it was a great product for community living. It is Australian made and recommended for cooler regions so that was of particular interest to us living in the South West Region of Victoria. The thermal insulation conserves heat leading to a rapid breakdown of the materials inside.  It is rodent resistant, has no odor and can kill weeds and seeds, so the rubbish doesn’t go back on to the garden. We have found it easy for our residents to use with the open and drop close lid. You can put in wet materials such as food scraps as well as the usual compostable materials. We believe that we are contributing positively to the environment with the aerated composting of household and garden waste instead of adding this type of waste to the environment.

Green Cone In-ground Composting System

Another system Heatherlie has installed is “The Green Cone system“. This is a great way to compost, there is no turning involved. Using the Green Cone System, you can eliminate most of your kitchen waste, reducing your garbage by 20%.

The design of the unit utilises a solar heating effect between the inner and outer cones. This promotes air circulation, which facilitates the growth of beneficial micro-organisms and the desirable aerobic digestion process. The household food waste is converted into water, carbon dioxide and a small amount of residue. As over 90% of the waste material in the Green Cone is absorbed safely as water by the soil, the Green Cone only needs to be cleaned once every few years.

Raised Garden Beds

In 2011 Heatherlie Homes installed raised garden beds in our resident’s vegetable garden, some funded through a government initiative. These have proved a real winner with the residents and in 2021 Heatherlie upgraded the whole area with all new raised garden beds. This has aided residents to tend their gardens safely and easily.

BFA free drink bottles

Heatherlie Residents had an opportunity to obtain BFA free drink bottles and this was extensively supported by the residents. Residents who obtained the drink bottles have reported that they are easy to use when doing exercise, shopping or playing golf. These bottles are BFA free and automatically seal between sips which ensures no spills. They are also easy as a one handed operation and break resistant.
